Advertised price and financing choice
A dealer’s advertised price must represent the total amount charged, except GST, QST and the environmental duty applicable to new tires. A consumer cannot be forced to finance or lease the vehicle and may pay cash or choose a lender.
Vehicle label and disclosures
Each used vehicle offered by a dealer must carry a label stating, among other things, its price, year, make, model, serial number, mileage and warranty category. Where applicable, it must also disclose prior use, certain repairs, the need for a mechanical inspection certificate and any “seriously defective automobile” declaration. The label delivered to the buyer forms part of the contract, subject to the exceptions provided by law.
Sales contract
A dealer sale must be documented by a clear, legible written contract identifying the parties, the dealer permit, the vehicle, price, taxes, total and warranties. A French version must be provided before another language may be chosen in accordance with applicable rules. The buyer must receive a signed copy.
Warranties provided by law
Warranties of fitness for purpose, reasonable durability, conformity with representations and protection against hidden defects apply automatically. A dealer cannot exclude them by saying “as is” or “as seen.” They may continue to apply after a specific good-working-order warranty ends.

For categories A through C, the good-working-order warranty ends when the first limit is reached.
Inspection, registry and financing
Before signing, it is prudent to test-drive and inspect the vehicle, verify its history and search the Register of Personal and Movable Real Rights (RDPRM). An instalment-sales contract is subject to special rules, including credit-cost disclosures and, in some situations, a very short cancellation period. Exact rights depend on the contract and the facts.
